Flywheel Web Hosting Compared with Main Competitors

In this Flywheel web hosting review, we explore why Flywheel is a leading managed WordPress hosting provider known for its focus on simplicity, performance, and design. However, it faces strong competition from other hosting providers that offer similar services. In this web hosting comparison, we’ll evaluate Flywheel against its main competitors: WP Engine, Kinsta, SiteGround, and Bluehost. We’ll examine factors such as performance, features, pricing, and support to help you decide which hosting provider is best suited for your needs. Whether you’re a freelancer, agency, or small business, this Flywheel web hosting review will provide valuable insights into Flywheel’s strengths and how it stacks up against the competition.

1. Flywheel vs WP Engine

Overview: WP Engine and Flywheel are closely related since WP Engine acquired Flywheel in 2019. However, they remain distinct brands with different target markets. WP Engine primarily targets larger businesses and enterprises, while Flywheel focuses more on freelancers, small agencies, and smaller businesses.

Features:

  • Performance: Both Flywheel and WP Engine offer high-performance hosting, but WP Engine has more advanced features like Global Edge Security and advanced caching mechanisms that benefit large-scale websites.
  • Ease of Use: Flywheel is known for its intuitive and user-friendly interface, making it an excellent choice for beginners and agencies. WP Engine, while still user-friendly, is more complex and offers more customization, making it more suited for developers and enterprise-level users.
  • Customer Support: Both offer 24/7 customer support, but WP Engine’s support is more comprehensive, with dedicated account management for higher-tier plans.
  • Pricing: Flywheel’s pricing is more affordable, especially for smaller websites and agencies. WP Engine’s plans are more expensive, reflecting its additional features and enterprise focus.

Best For:

  • Flywheel: Freelancers, small to medium-sized agencies, and small businesses.
  • WP Engine: Larger businesses, developers, and enterprises with more complex hosting needs.

2. Flywheel vs Kinsta

Overview: Kinsta is another premium managed WordPress hosting provider known for its speed and reliability. Like Flywheel, Kinsta is built on Google Cloud infrastructure, offering powerful performance and scalability.

Features:

  • Performance: Both Flywheel and Kinsta offer exceptional performance, with features like built-in caching, CDN integration, and scalable architecture. However, Kinsta’s use of Google Cloud’s Premium Tier network gives it a slight edge in terms of speed and reliability.
  • Ease of Use: Flywheel’s dashboard is designed with simplicity in mind, making it easy for non-technical users. Kinsta’s dashboard, while user-friendly, offers more advanced features, which may be more suitable for experienced users.
  • Customer Support: Kinsta is known for its excellent customer support, offering 24/7 live chat with WordPress experts. Flywheel also provides 24/7 support, but Kinsta’s support is often praised for its faster response times.
  • Pricing: Kinsta’s pricing is slightly higher than Flywheel’s, especially at the entry level. However, Kinsta offers unlimited free migrations, which can be a significant advantage for businesses with multiple sites.

Best For:

  • Flywheel: Users who prioritize ease of use and a more affordable entry point.
  • Kinsta: Users who need cutting-edge performance and are willing to pay a premium for it.

3. Flywheel vs SiteGround

Overview: SiteGround is a versatile web hosting provider that offers managed WordPress hosting alongside other hosting services like shared hosting, cloud hosting, and dedicated servers. SiteGround is known for its affordability and solid performance, making it a popular choice for budget-conscious users.

Features:

  • Performance: Flywheel outperforms SiteGround in terms of performance, thanks to its managed infrastructure and optimized environments specifically for WordPress. SiteGround, while reliable, does not match Flywheel’s speed and advanced caching features.
  • Ease of Use: Flywheel’s platform is more intuitive and designed specifically for WordPress users. SiteGround offers a more traditional cPanel interface, which can be overwhelming for beginners.
  • Customer Support: SiteGround is renowned for its excellent customer support, which includes 24/7 live chat, phone, and ticket support. Flywheel’s support is also strong, but SiteGround’s broader range of support channels may be more appealing to users who prefer phone support.
  • Pricing: SiteGround’s pricing is generally more affordable, especially at the entry-level. However, as you move to higher-tier plans, the price difference between SiteGround and Flywheel narrows.

Best For:

  • Flywheel: Users looking for a specialized WordPress hosting experience with higher performance.
  • SiteGround: Budget-conscious users or those who need a more versatile hosting provider that supports multiple platforms beyond WordPress.

4. Flywheel vs Bluehost

Overview: Bluehost is one of the most well-known web hosting providers, particularly for its affordable shared hosting plans. It also offers managed WordPress hosting, making it a competitor to Flywheel.

Features:

  • Performance: Flywheel outshines Bluehost in terms of performance. While Bluehost’s managed WordPress hosting is decent, it doesn’t match Flywheel’s speed optimizations and managed environment.
  • Ease of Use: Both platforms are user-friendly, but Flywheel’s dashboard is specifically tailored for WordPress, making it more streamlined for WordPress users. Bluehost’s interface, though intuitive, serves a broader audience and may require more navigation for WordPress-specific tasks.
  • Customer Support: Bluehost offers 24/7 support via chat and phone, but its support has mixed reviews regarding response times and quality. Flywheel, on the other hand, is known for its dedicated and knowledgeable support staff focused on WordPress.
  • Pricing: Bluehost is generally cheaper than Flywheel, particularly for entry-level plans. However, with lower prices come fewer features and potentially lower performance.

Best For:

  • Flywheel: Users who prioritize performance and WordPress-specific features.
  • Bluehost: Users on a tight budget or those who need a general hosting provider with WordPress capabilities.

5. Flywheel vs DreamHost

Overview: DreamHost is another veteran in the web hosting industry, known for its affordability and flexibility. DreamHost offers managed WordPress hosting under the DreamPress brand, competing directly with Flywheel.

Features:

  • Performance: Flywheel generally offers better performance due to its infrastructure built specifically for WordPress. DreamHost’s DreamPress is solid but doesn’t quite match the level of optimization Flywheel provides.
  • Ease of Use: Flywheel’s dashboard is more user-friendly, especially for users who are new to WordPress. DreamHost’s custom control panel is functional but may take some time to get used to.
  • Customer Support: Both Flywheel and DreamHost offer 24/7 support, but Flywheel’s support is more specialized for WordPress users. DreamHost’s support is competent, but Flywheel’s WordPress expertise can be a significant advantage for those who need more in-depth assistance.
  • Pricing: DreamHost’s pricing is more competitive, especially for users who need an affordable managed WordPress hosting solution. Flywheel is more expensive but justifies the cost with better performance and features.

Best For:

  • Flywheel: Users who need top-tier performance and a managed WordPress experience.
  • DreamHost: Users who want a balance between affordability and managed hosting, especially those on a budget.

6. Conclusion: Which Hosting Provider is Best for You?

After a detailed comparison of Flywheel with its main competitors, we can conclude this web hosting review with the following:

  • Flywheel is best suited for users who need a user-friendly, performance-optimized platform specifically designed for WordPress. Its ease of use, reliable performance, and excellent customer support make it an ideal choice for freelancers, agencies, and small businesses.
  • WP Engine is the go-to option for larger businesses and enterprises that require advanced features and scalability. Its higher pricing reflects its enterprise-level offerings.
  • Kinsta is an excellent choice for users who prioritize performance and are willing to pay a premium for cutting-edge infrastructure. It’s best for users who need top-tier performance and reliability.
  • SiteGround offers a balance between affordability and performance, making it a good choice for budget-conscious users who still need solid WordPress hosting.
  • Bluehost is ideal for beginners or users on a tight budget. While it doesn’t match Flywheel in performance, its affordability and general hosting capabilities make it a popular choice.
  • DreamHost is a strong option for those who need managed WordPress hosting at a more affordable price point. It’s suitable for users who want to balance cost with the benefits of managed hosting.

I have tried several hosting services for my clients over the years, and Flywheel hosting is the best I’ve seen for agencies. Its speed and uptime are excellent. The only issue is their pricing structure. There’s a jump from a plan for 1 website to a plan for 10 websites, with no option in between. So if you manage 5-6 websites you still have to pay for the 10-website plan, which is frustrating!
